The Dust Moves

The Dust Moves, composed and animated by composer/saxophonist Dan Blake and featuring the Mivos Quartet, is based on the famous Buddhist tale of enlightenment in which a monk saw dust floating in a door frame bathed in light, realizing the profound stillness that surrounded that dust. This imagining of stillness within motion is a guiding metaphor for the work, which presents a series of simple yet compellingly introspective animations narrated by a highly interactive and genre-bending. This work was made possible by the Jerome Fund for New Music and New Music USA. It is the result of a rich collaboration that blurs the boundaries between new music and free improvisation. The Dust Moves will be released as a DVD by Infrequent Seams at WinterJazz Fest on January 16, 2016.
